In een appgroep vroeg iemand hoe men naar het vaccineren (in algemene zin) van kinderen keek. Iemand anders deelde daarop een artikel: “Medisch scheikundige geeft drie redenen waarom hij zijn kinderen niet laat vaccineren.” Wat opviel, was dat hij helemaal niet wist wie deze “medisch scheikundige” was, en of hij daadwerkelijk enige autoriteit bezat in zijn vakgebied. Verder was de persoon die het artikel deelde een leek in medische kwesties. De consensus onder medici is in het voordeel van vaccinaties. Oftewel, het overgrote deel van alle artsen komt overeen dat volwassenen en kinderen alle aangeraden vaccinaties zouden moeten krijgen. Wat bewoog deze persoon om een minderheidsmening te delen, terwijl hij als leek naar alle waarschijnlijkheid niet in staat was om te beoordelen wat inhoudelijk de sterkste mening was? Dacht hij dat een artikel van een onbekende persoon, op een onbekende website, over materie waar niemand in de appgroep expertise in had, voldoende zou zijn? Zou iemand iets dergelijks uithalen omtrent een theologische kwestie, dan zou hij in dezelfde groep onmiddellijk terechtgewezen worden. Met alle informatie die vandaag de dag beschikbaar is, wanen we onszelf al gauw bekwaam om conclusies te trekken. De juiste conclusies trekken is in veel onderwerpen echter moeilijker dan het lijkt en vereist expertise, iets wat de leek paradoxaal genoeg niet doorheeft. Hoog tijd dus om nader te bekijken wat er achter deze \u2018lekenwetenschap\u2019 zit, hoe dit zich verhoudt tot de Islam en hoe we dan w\u00e9l kritisch kunnen zijn.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018Pick and choose\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Als we blijven bij het voorbeeld, dan valt de term “medisch scheikundige” op. Alsof onze appgroep deelnemer wilde zeggen: Deze man weet waarover hij praat. Aan het benoemen van die studieachtergrond om de mening kracht bij te zetten zit echter ook een andere kant, namelijk dat je dat kennisgebied dan ook daadwerkelijk serieus moet nemen. En dat doe je niet wanneer je zonder kennis van zaken al die andere wetenschappers en artsen (de meerderheid), die overeenkomen dat de bij ons bekende vaccinaties een goede zaak zijn, naast je neerlegt. Het is alsof onze leek zegt: \u2018De mening van deze geleerde is sterker dan de mening van die andere geleerden!\u2019 Op basis van wat velt onze leek dit oordeel? Zo\u2019n persoon slaat in werkelijkheid geen acht op het medische kennisgebied en neemt het niet serieus, tenzij de “dr.” verkondigt wat hij zelf ook vindt. In werkelijkheid neemt hij vooral zijn eigen mening serieus. Let op: dit is geen reclame voor vaccinaties, maar een kritiek op hoe sommigen te werk gaan bij dit soort kwesties.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Islam en informatie\/conclusies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interessant is dat de islamitische theologie veel waarde hecht aan een correcte methodologie om tot een oordeel te komen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de wetenschap van usoel al-fiqh<\/em>. Voordat een geleerde tot een oordeel komt, moet deze op zoek naar informatie in de islamitische bronnen, maakt hij onderscheid tussen wat meer en minder betrouwbaar is (bijvoorbeeld sterke versus zwakke overleveringen), raadpleegt hij werken van eerdere geleerden, neemt hij consensus in ogenschouw en baseert hij zich op bepaalde principes\/stelregels. Noemenswaardig is dat betrouwbare informatie hier pas het begin is. Om tot de juiste conclusie te komen, moet de geleerde goed weten hoe met de beschikbare informatie om te gaan. Hetzelfde geldt voor bijvoorbeeld de wetenschap van Koranexegese (tafsier<\/em>). Oftewel, de Islam is voor een groot deel gebouwd op enerzijds het identificeren welke informatie correct\/betrouwbaar is en welke niet (en wat dus als bron gebruikt kan worden, zoals in de hadieth<\/em>-wetenschappen), en anderzijds kennis over hoe, op basis van de juiste informatie, tot de juiste conclusie te komen. Juist een moslim zou dit proces en de expertise die het dikwijls vereist daarom moeten kunnen waarderen. Het is makkelijk om op basis van in principe correcte informatie, tot foute conclusies te komen. Dit geldt zeker ook voor vele complexe hedendaagse (niet-religieuze) vraagstukken. Overigens is het mogelijk dat mensen met expertise op basis van dezelfde informatie tot verschillende conclusies komen. Dit bestaat volop binnen de islamitische jurisprudentie, en ook daarbuiten als het gaat om bijvoorbeeld (corona)beleid. Dit zou niemand ongemakkelijk moeten maken en geen reden moeten zijn tot wantrouwen. Het is een goed teken dat mensen met verstand van zaken elkaars visie kritisch tegen het licht houden. Het is een natuurlijk gevolg van de complexiteit van dit soort zaken, dat beschikbare informatie niet altijd leidt tot eenduidige conclusies. Dit is niet iets nieuws en is van alle tijden.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Maar ik wil me toch mengen\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Iemand kan zeggen: Het is voorgekomen dat theorie\u00ebn of idee\u00ebn die niet breed geaccepteerd waren in de wetenschappelijke gemeenschap, later toch correct bleken te zijn en mainstream werden. Zou ik of degene wiens mening ik verspreid, niet ook zo iemand kunnen zijn? Een aantal opmerkingen hierover:<\/p>\n

Alhoewel dat klopt, blijken simpelweg de meeste van zulke idee\u00ebn en theorie\u00ebn incorrect te zijn en geen bredere impact te hebben. Oftewel, dat sommige afwijkende visies correct blijken en de wetenschap vooruitbrengen, betekent niet dat elk afwijkend idee correct is.<\/li>\n
De mensen die met theorie\u00ebn komen die later correct blijken te zijn, zijn over het algemeen mensen met expertise in het betreffende vakgebied en geen leken (Albert Einstein is zo een voorbeeld).<\/li>\n
Hoe kan de leek beoordelen dat persoon A met een afwijkende visie die ingaat tegen een consensus (in welk vakgebied dan ook) gelijk heeft? Dat een leek de mening van een kleine minderheid naar voren schuift als de correcte mening is inconsistent met het feit dat hij\/zij leek is, zelfs al zou die mening correct blijken.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/p>\n
Kritisch zijn in hedendaagse vraagstukken op zich is niet het probleem en dit stuk is geen ontmoediging daarvan. Om af te sluiten dus wat gedachten om mee te nemen:<\/p>\n

Wanneer de leek zich in discussies mengt die in werkelijkheid wetenschappelijk van aard zijn, vertroebelt dit het debat en voegt dit niets toe. Maar let op: dit moet mensen niet per se ontmoedigen om hun perspectief kenbaar te maken. Er is een groot verschil tussen zeggen: \u201cIk heb weinig kennis over vaccinaties en ik voel me niet prettig bij het nemen ervan\u201d versus \u201cVaccinaties zijn slecht\u201d, of \u201cIk zie ook negatieve effecten van het coronabeleid om me heen en ik vraag me af of de voordelen opwegen tegen de nadelen\u201d versus \u201cHet coronabeleid van de overheid deugt van geen kant\u201d.<\/li>\n
Kritisch zijn betekent in de eerste plaats kritisch zijn naar je eigen conclusies. Sommigen zijn kritisch naar alles en iedereen, inclusief mensen met expertise, behalve naar zichzelf. Ben je echt serieus, leg je visie dan bijvoorbeeld eens voor ter feedback aan of spar met iemand met expertise.<\/li>\n
Kritisch zijn is geen vrijbrief om lukraak informatie te verspreiden en\/of door te sturen waarvan je niet goed kunt beoordelen hoe betrouwbaar deze is, of hoe deze informatie zich verhoudt tot het grotere plaatje, omdat het in je eigen straatje past.<\/li>\n
Kritisch zijn komt ook met de verantwoordelijkheid om je grenzen te kennen en je mening niet groter te maken dan die is op het moment dat het complexe zaken betreft waar je niet genoeg achtergrond in hebt. Dit geldt natuurlijk in religieuze context, maar ook voor onderwerpen zoals vaccinaties of corona. Het paradoxale is dat het vaak wat kennis en inzicht vereist om dit in te kunnen zien, en anders wel bescheidenheid en nederigheid.<\/li>\n
Het kunnen herkennen van complexiteit en weten wanneer je een pas op de plaats moet maken voordat je je conclusies trekt, is een teken van intelligentie en bedachtzaamheid. En bedachtzaamheid is een onderdeel van de Islam. De Profeet (vrede zij met hem) zei tegen een metgezel: \u201cJij hebt twee karaktereigenschappen waar Allah van houdt: verdraagzaamheid en bedachtzaamheid.\u201d<\/em> 1<\/a><\/li>\n
In hoe je te werk gaat stel je een voorbeeld. Onbedoeld kan het zijn dat je onjuiste informatie of conclusies helpt verspreiden. Als je je als leek maar in elke niet-religieuze discussie mengt en dingen verspreidt, moet je niet verbaasd opkijken als je mensen islamitische consensus ziet bekritiseren door het negeren van de methodologie\u00ebn en fundamenten van de islamitische kennisgebieden. En hoe we zelf met informatie omgaan, is uiteindelijk ook iets wat we overbrengen op onze kinderen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
